Ranking the Myers Briggs Types By Who Is The Hardest to Read on a First Date

Ever been on a first date where the vibes were immaculate—we’re talking lots of shared laughter and intense eye contact—only to be met with total radio silence afterwards? Or maybe you spent the whole time wondering if they’re even listening only for them to invite you for a “round 2” before you even got home?

We’ve all been there, and let’s be real: you’ve probably been the one doing the confusing, too. While some people wear their hearts on their sleeves, others are much harder to crack, and to help you decode the dating dynamic, we’ve ranked the 16 types by how easy they are to read during that first hour of coffee or cocktails.

INTJ: All Eyes, Few Words

On a first date, the INTJ’s “observation mode" can come across a bit too indifferent and detached, making them the hardest type to crack. Because they’re so focused on analyzing their date’s character and long-term compatibility, they may forget to send out standard “approval cues” like nodding and smiling. Their date might leave feeling like they just attended an interview rather than a romantic outing.

The tell: If they are asking deep, analytical questions—focusing more on why you do things rather than just what you do—they’re interested.

ISTP: Connection is Difficult, Even If It’s Real

ISTPs might look neutral or even bored on a date, even if they’re having a really great time. They aren't big on sweet talk and may give only low-key reactions to jokes or compliments.

This isn't a lack of interest—it’s just that emotional displays aren’t the ISTP’s strong suit, and they’re not great at expressing their feelings openly. Their date can’t work out if they’re uninterested or just timid.

The tell: If an ISTP suggests grabbing dessert somewhere else or doing a post-dinner activity, you’re in.

INFJ: A Bag of Mixed Signals

It’s almost impossible to read an INFJ’s feelings on a first date because they’re too busy reading the other person to offer much up in return. INFJs want a soulmate, so they’ll put their date’s character and morals under constant scrutiny, but they’ll also go out of their way to make sure the experience feels like a deep connection rather than a cold interview. By the end of the night, the date might feel like they’ve been heard by the world’s most empathetic person, but at the same time have no idea what the INFJ actually thought of them.

The tell: If they shift from reading you to letting you read them—like giving vulnerable, unfiltered answers to your personal questions instead of gracefully deflecting—it’s a major green light.

INTP: Second Guessing Holds Them Back

INTPs can appear robotic or overly formal on a first date. Ironically, this usually happens when they’re really into the person. Because social grace isn't their natural default, they’re manually monitoring their own behavior: “Am I making too much eye contact? Not enough? Would it be weird if I say X?” They go out of their way to avoid being too intense or weird before they know their date is a “safe” person to share their eccentricity with, and this cautiousness makes them extremely hard to read.

The tell: If they start sharing their eccentric thoughts or niche obsessions, they like you and want to test the waters to see if there’s a deeper, intellectual connection.

ISTJ: Slow to Open Up

ISTJs treat a first date with a level of professionalism that can make it hard to take the pulse on their romantic interest. They’re typically polite, attentive and tend to stick to “safe” topics, because they want to make sure that their date is trustworthy and reliable before they lower their guard. The date, however, might wonder if the ISTJ is actually into them or just too well-mannered to cut the evening short.

The tell: If they break their original plan for the rest of the evening to spend more time with you, they’re locked in.

INFP: Reserved and Distant on the Outside

INFPs can feel a “10/10” level of passion and excitement but only show a “3/10” on the surface. They dial themselves back because they don't want to scare their date away by being “too much” too soon—like admitting that they’re already catching feelings in the first hour of drinks. To make things even more confusing, they’re natural empaths who may accidentally mirror their date’s energy. This makes them so pleasant to be around but impossible to suss out.

The tell: If they start talking about their values or share something very personal, that's a sign they like you and want to give you a glimpse of their inner world.

ENTJ: In It To Win It

ENTJs are so good at leading a conversation and being “on” that it’s often hard to tell if they’re actually into someone or they’re just like that with everybody. On a first date, they'll ask sharp, incisive questions that make their date feel like the most interesting person in the world, but it's just their way of gathering data to see if they’re worth the ROI in terms of their limited time and energy.

The tell:  If they suddenly cancel their 8:00 PM hard “deadline” (the one they kept open just in case) to see where the night goes with you, they're hooked.

ISFP: A Listener, Not a Talker

ISFPs are the most chill dating partners you’ll ever have, which can easily be misinterpreted as “don’t care” or “not interested.” Their dating partner might have to do all the heavy lifting to keep the conversation flowing and may get annoyed that the ISFP isn't putting in their fair share of effort. In reality, the ISFP simply values authenticity and would rather say nothing than fill the air with empty words. Plus, they’re more focused on gauging the overall “feel” of the connection than on the specific details of what’s being said.

The tell: You’ve got their attention if they invite you into their sensory world—like handing you one of their earbuds to hear a specific song or offering you to taste their drink.

ENTP: Uses Words as a Smokescreen

ENTPs are high energy and they talk a lot, which makes them seem easy to read, but it’s often a smokescreen. Just because they’re cracking jokes and keeping the conversation moving doesn't mean they’re catching feelings—it’s just their default social setting. In fact, they often use humor and high vibes as a defensive barrier because for them, it's much easier to riff on a topic than it is to have a sincere moment.

The tell: You’re in if they shift from entertaining you to trying to understand you by asking questions about your lifestyle, hobbies and opinions on things they care about.

ISFJ: Givers, Not Takers

ISFJs are naturally kind and accommodating, which can make it hard to tell if they're actually into their date or if they’re just being a good person. Because they hate the idea of hurting anyone’s feelings, they’ll laugh at their date’s jokes (even bad ones) and make sure they’re perfectly comfortable—even if they aren't feeling a spark. Their date will likely remain clueless about how the date went until the ISFJ initiates a second date—or blocks their number.

The tell: If they start disclosing personal information (e.g. a weird childhood nickname), that’s a huge sign.

ENFJ: Charming With Everyone

ENFJs are very good at making people feel like the only person in the world. They’ll ask a million questions and validate their date’s stories and opinions with such high engagement that the date may wonder if they've found “the One.” In reality, they may just be the latest person to be swept up in the ENFJ’s charm, while for the ENFJ, that romantic spark isn't actually there.

The tell: They are interested if they move from validating you to testing your “substance”—like asking about your vision for the future or the values you live by.

ENFP: Hopelessly Nice

ENFPs are people-pleasers at heart. Even if they aren't into the person, they would never want to be mean. Instead, they might become aggressively pleasant to keep the vibe upbeat. They’ll also feel like a fraud for faking their enthusiasm for too long, so they'll likely engineer a polite exit—like claiming to have a sick dog emergency or a “sudden” deadline they need to hit.

The tell: If they truly like you, they’ll drop the act and get real—perhaps by opening up about something that matters to them or giving you an intimate compliment .

ESTP: Unapologetically Flirtatious…With the Waiter

ESTPs are usually one of the easiest types to read, but they come with a specific “signal noise” that can be confusing. Because they're so naturally flirtatious and charming with everyone, their date might wonder: “Are they into me or the waiter?” ESTPs may also dodge deep and serious questions that reveal who they are as a person, which can make their date seem like they’re keeping them at arm's length.

The tell: You’ve got them if they focus their attention solely on you despite the distractions—ignoring their buzzing phone or not even looking around the place.

ESTJ: Will Never Lead You On

If an ESTJ is on a date, they are there for a reason, so they see no point in being mysterious or playing hard to get. They’ll likely be quite direct about their level of interest or lack thereof. If they aren't having a good time, they won't be cruel, but they will be decisively honest about the lack of a spark: “I’ve really enjoyed the conversation, but to be honest, I’m not feeling the connection I’m looking for.”

The tell: If they want to see you again, they’ll literally tell you they had a good time and schedule the next date before the first one is over.

ESFJ: Shows Their Feelings Like an Open Book

ESFJs are the definition of “what you see is what you get” because they naturally externalize how they’re feeling. They also appreciate knowing exactly where they stand with someone, so they give others that same energy right back. While they might not always come right out and say, “I have a crush on you” (or “I'm just not feeling it”), they will absolutely let the person know through the general vibe.

The tell: If they start asking about your family, routines or your 5-year goals, they like you and are mentally checking if you fit into their lives.

ESFP: What You See is What You Get

No one leaves a date with an ESFP wondering whether it went well or not, because ESFPs wear their hearts on their sleeves. If they like someone, they’ll be excited, affectionate and physically expressive. If they don't, they’ll just shift into the friendly coworker vibe—lots of smiles and nodding, but zero playful tension or “accidental” brushes of the arm. They know what they want, and they want you to know it too.

The tell: They’ll initiate physical touch and try to extend the night as long as possible.
