When it comes to INTJ characters, there are a lot to choose from. Authors and screenwriters love the figure of the gifted hero who’s single-minded, intelligent and sometimes ruthless.

The core traits of the INTJ personality type make for engaging and likeable characters. INTJs in TV shows, books and movies usually take the form of a lone wolf who always has a brilliant master plan and more than a few tricks up their sleeve.

If you’re looking for INTJ characters to relate to, here are 5 of the best.

1. Beth Harmon - The Queen’s Gambit

If you watched The Queen’s Gambit and identified with the main protagonist, Beth Harmon, you’re not alone. Harmon is a solitary character who has few friends. She is immensely focussed, arranging her entire life around the game of chess. During the course of her story, Harmon is unwavering in the pursuit of her long term goals and it’s impossible not to root for her.

Like many INTJ characters, Harmon has to overcome numerous obstacles, both emotional and physical through the course of her journey. She works against all the odds to win success in her professional career. One of the ways she does this is by learning from the people around her. She stays diligently devoted to improving her game, surrounding herself with experienced and knowledgeable chess masters who can help her when she needs it most.

2. Dr Gregory House - House

At the heart of the INTJ personality type is their love of problem-solving. No one exemplifies this trait more than Dr Gregory House. As a classic INTJ character, House thrives off of solving the challenges that present themselves to him in his professional life. He sees his patients as cases to solve, using the full range of their intellect and experience to find the clues and come up with a creative solution.

This quest for the right diagnosis is what Dr House loves most. He is less comfortable dealing with people and their emotions. In his opinion “Everybody lies” so he does his best to interact with his patients as little as possible. Like many INTJ characters, House is independent and prefers to keep himself apart from all but a select few people.

Following the INTJ personality type, House also has a tendency to show superiority to those around him. He is impatient, abrupt and usually comes across as condescending. He sees himself as above the rules, prioritising the work he enjoys and neglecting the rest. In many ways House is a classic INTJ character.

3. Claire Underwood - House of Cards

Claire Underwood is one of the most impressive and unnerving INTJ characters you can find. The wife of main protagonist Frank Underwood in the House of Cards, Claire works with unflinching focus to execute her long-range plans. She is uncompromising in the pursuit of her goals and it is exhilarating to watch.

Like many INTJ characters, Claire has a superiority complex. She knows how to win people over and manipulate those around her, always taking care to maintain emotional distance. Claire uses people as pawns in her game and does everything in her power to get what she wants.

Thanks to her future-focussed personality type, Claire Underwood is endlessly problem-solving. She adapts her plans to respond to the challenges around her, making difficult and sometimes brutal decisions to get out of challenging situations. Claire is one of the INTJ characters you really don’t want to mess with!

4. Katniss Everdeen - The Hunger Games

When it comes to INTJ characters, Katniss Everdeen is perhaps not the most obvious type. She is not an intellectual and she doesn’t work in a profession where she gets to show off her INTJ characteristics. But through the course of her journey, she reveals her INTJ personality type to the full.

Determined, fearless and focussed, Katniss overcomes the immense challenges thrown at her by thinking strategically. Through the course of her story, Katniss uses all the resources available to her to come up with a solution to the complex systems at work in the world where she lives. By thinking ahead, she makes sure she comes out on top even when the odds are stacked against her.

Importantly, following one of the lesser known INTJ character traits, Katniss also shows a willingness to learn from the people around her. She draws on their knowledge and uses it for her own self-improvement, learning how to play the game of the all-powerful Capitol.

Katniss is hugely selective in her relationships. Like many INTJ characters, she keeps most people at arm's length, only letting in people who she truly trusts and respects. This makes her seem standoffish to some of the people around her but the reader knows that it is one of her biggest strengths.

5. Littlefinger - Game of Thrones

While Littlefinger is not a likeable character, he is definitely someone to be admired. When it comes to INTJ characters, what usually stands out most is their endless planning. In the case of Peter Baelish, known as Littlefinger, this is taken to extremes.

Littlefinger will stop at nothing to gain power. He is skilled at manipulation and political maneuvering. This INTJ character takes things to extremes, using blackmail, bribery and even assassination to get what he wants.

As is often the case with INTJ characters, Littlefinger’s life is centered on the pursuit of his professional goals. He has no time or interest in developing the other parts of his life and all his relationships are for the sole purpose of gaining more influence. As a result, he can be seen as an example of what can happen when the emotionally distant parts of the INTJ character are taken too far.
