What is the DISC assessment?

Developed in the 1920's by psychologist William Moulton Marston, the DISC is a simple but powerful way to understand workplace behavior. Built on just four primary personality types—Drive, Influence, Support, and Clarity—the DISC assessment is easy to learn, while also providing deep insights into how people get motivated, work together, and produce results.

What does the DISC assessment measure?

The DISC assessment measures two fundamental aspects of behavior, which are combined to create the four DISC types. Each of the DISC types has a typical approach and style in the workplace:

  • Drive. Actively approaching challenges. Drive types tend to be assertive leaders.
  • Influence. Engaging actively with support. Influence types tend to be enthusiastic leaders.
  • Support. Responding with support. Support types tend to be helpful contributors.
  • Clarity. Responding thoughtfully to challenges. Clarity types tend to be precise contributors.

Test takers are scored on their fit with all four types, with the highest score being their primary DISC type. In addition, the assessment scores test takers on 8 subtypes, to provide more nuanced profiles for individuals whose behavior demonstrates a mix of styles.

What’s covered in the results for the DISC assessment?

The DISC report is designed to introduce the basic concepts of behavioral style, as well as to explain clearly how these factors are observed in the workplace. In addition to foundational sections on the four types and the behaviors described by the DISC framework, the DISC report includes detailed sections on relevant topic areas, including task management, teamwork, communication, conflict, and leadership.

What are the benefits of using the DISC?

The DISC offers an easy-to-understand model that illuminates key aspects of workplace behavior. You can expect a variety of helpful benefits, including:

  • Quickly learn about different work styles with a simple, accessible system of four personality types
  • Establish a common language for discussing different styles at work
  • Gain insight into individual strengths and weaknesses through practical, nonjudgmental language
  • Understand individual styles of communication, motivation, and productivity
  • Foster awareness of how various strengths on the team can be best utilized
  • Build a foundation for individual development by creating awareness of natural strengths and talents, as well as areas for growth

Is the DISC valid and reliable?

Truity’s DISC assessment uses an original test design that was statistically validated with a global sample of more than 43,000 test users. Trusted by Fortune 500 companies and millions of individuals worldwide, our DISC assessment is designed to meet the rigorous standards expected for coaching, leadership development, and workplace training.

When you choose a personality assessment, it’s important for the test to pass important evaluations of validity, as a test is only useful if it accurately measures what it intends to measure. In order to be valid, a psychological test must also be reliable – it needs to produce similar results over time and across different questions.

Truity’s DISC assessment demonstrates strong internal reliability, meaning each scale consistently measures the behavioral traits it is designed to assess. Analyses of validity similarly provide clear evidence that the assessment measures meaningful psychological dimensions and that those dimensions align with the four core DISC styles: Drive, Influence, Support, and Clarity.

Our research included an analysis of a global sample representing a wide range of ages, genders, and work roles and responsibilities, demonstrating meaningful relationships between DISC scores and real-world workplace characteristics. For example, we found that individuals in managerial roles scored higher on Drive and lower on Support than non-managers. For managers, higher scores on Drive and Influence were positively correlated with larger numbers of direct reports, while Support and Clarity scores were inversely related. These patterns demonstrate a meaningful and measurable connection between DISC scores and key workplace outcomes.
