I have always wondered what heck means, never took the time to google it.

Not sure if this is factual, but what I've learned about the history of heck, is that peopled wanted to make a word that would fit the phrase "What the..." without getting in trouble or be seen as "bad", as "hell" and the f word were considered vulgar and evil. So, they combined the two words to create "heck" and that's how the phrase came to be: "What the heck?"

It's the place you go if you don't believe in gosh.

Joking aside, it was probably created as a euphemism for hell, and was chosen because it sounded somewhat similar. Though considering it's spelling, it might actually be a combination of hell and f***, which would make its use as a euphemism rather ironic. Both terms do fit the "What the ___?!" structure, so it's a possibility.

I really am overthinking this, aren't I?
