How many times have we heard someone say, “I’m just not the creative type,” or worse, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body”? Unfortunately, in our Western workaday world, we have come to assume that creativity pertains to a limited scope of human endeavors⁠—things like painting, composing, and acting⁠—and that only a limited number of us have the acumen for such tasks.

I’ve been working at a non-profit for the last 3 ½ years, and we’ve just concluded a process where we revisited our mission. It occurs to me, though we may consider a mission statement crucial for an organization, we may never consider having one as individuals. Yet, when we look at the most fundamental questions of meaning and purpose in life, they point toward crafting our personal mission in the process. The following is a step-by-step process by which any individual could articulate his or her own personal mission, as well as vision, values, calling, and guiding principles.

There are several languages for understanding ourselves which have evolved over time and which carry their own converts and skeptics. What follows is a translation of salient overlaps between two of those languages: astrology and the personality system created by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. My aim is to show similarities between these two approaches to personality.
